History of the Jed Forest Hunt

The Jed Forest dates from 1884, when formed by Capt. Palmer Douglas. The country as now constituted has existed since 1894 when a portion of the Oxnam Water country was granted by the Duke of Buccleuch's, of whose territory it is still held to be part of.

Hunt country

The Jed Hunt country is rectangular in shape approximately 15mile x 7mile. It lies in the county of Roxburghshire and the hunt boundaries are the River Teviot to the North, the River Slitrig to the West, the Roman Road, Dere Street to the East and the Scotland / England Border to the South.

It is a varied and difficult country, often wild and windy, so that hounds of deep music are required. The terrain is mixed with areas of plough to the east and north, upland and white hill to the south and west and mostly rolling pasture in the centre. Neighbouring packs are the Liddesdale to the West, the Border to the South and the Duke of Buccleuchs to the North and East.
