The kennels
The present Kennels were built/converted in 1949 by R S Hawker MFH (1949 - 78). The original buildings were built in 1804 and served as the stable yard and coach house for Abbotrule House, whose remains are in the wood behind the kennels.
The kennels contain one large hound yard and lodge. Unlike other packs, all the hounds live together and not in separate lodges for dogs and bitches. There are two small other lodges and yards for in season bitches and visiting Beagle packs as well as there being two whelping lodges.
The other building at the kennels is the stable block and flesh house. The kennels has five stables which are used for the hunt horses. There are also two houses.
Hounds
22 and a half couple of hounds kennelled with the Jed Forest are the property of the hunt. The hounds are of hill hound breeding which is a mixture of Fell and Modern English Foxhound. These hounds are renowned for the quality of sport they show, blending the finest qualities of both types of hounds together. Not only did they show good sport, but they also had great success on the flags at shows. Apart from winning most championships on the Northern show circuit, they have won prizes on their only appearance at Peterborough Royal Foxhound show and in 1998 they won Supreme Champion at Lowther. Many other successes of hounds bred at the Jed Forest and shown by other packs have also been achieved in recent years, including Jed Forest Sergeant who won the championship at Rydal Hound show for the Blencathra.
